Quick Japanese Siomai, a Savoury Satisfying Snack

I never thought about how easy it was to make siomai because I usually make dumplings from scratch. However, my pretentious no-carb diet and love for savoury dishes led me to pilfering our kitchen with possible ingredients to feed my stomach. To my surprise I realized I had these random ingredients that could actually work to make siomai. It’s so easy, you just quickly mix all the ingredients, roll it all up, cut into bite-sized pieces and leave to steam!


Ground Pork

Onion Chives


Nori (Dried Seaweed)

Salt & Pepper

Light Soy Sauce


  1. Mix ground pork, chopped onion chives, carrots and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Place ground pork mixture on the nori and flatten.
  3. Roll the nori and cut into desired size.
  4. let steam for a few minutes.
  5. Once cooked, dip into some light soy sauce and enjoy!

When I lived alone I used to steam my cabbage rolls and dumplings on top of my rice cooker while the rice was cooking. If I didn’t have a steamer I would place my dumplings in a strainer and place it on top of a pot filled with boiling water. Living alone and having limited resources definitely makes one a more resourceful, ingenious person. It’s so easy, it’s so quick and it’s one of our go-to meals as busy working people. You can set aside the ground pork mixture or cook it the evening and have it as your lunch. You can also play with the kind of ingredients you want, my original recipe didn’t have any carrots.
